What do you know, Selfie is one year old. And I did not even know the term until recently.
In 2013 the Oxford Dictionary anointed “selfie” as the word of the year. Apparently in less than a year the usage had increased by 17000%.
There have been new phones created and marketed as selfie phones. Typically they have a camera with a wide angle lens on the screen side of the phone. These were originally intended to facilitate Skype calls.
According to the people at Oxford Dictionary the term was coined by an Australian who took and shared a photo of him in an inebriated state.
As is often the case, people invent new ways of using a technology that the designers never imagined. In this short time we now have selfie contests, and spin off words like helfie (selfie of your new hairdo), a drelfie (a drunk selfie) and more. There are many how-to pages to guide you in the different styles of shooting a selfie. It is not as easy as you think.
What prompted this post? Do you really want a shock? Take a selfie in the morning before your first cup of coffee…! Is that me – yuck! 🙂
