It is a strange title for a series of books, I know, but these two books I recommend highly. While they are somewhat technical, the author (Thord Daniel Hedengren) has a pleasant style and the books are ideal for the self learner.
The first book focuses on theme design and the examples of theme design included are worked through step by step from concept to final design in the book.
In the second book the emphasis is more on understanding the technology of WordPress and how it can be used for applications other than blogging.
Both books are full-colour, high quality. They are a pleasure to own and read.
- Smashing WordPress Themes: Making WordPress Beautiful (Smashing Magazine Book Series)
- Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog (Smashing Magazine Book Series)
Professional WordPress: Design and Development
Brad Williams. David Damstra and Hal Stern
Professional WordPress Plugin Development
Brad Williams, Ozh Richard, Justin Tadlock
These are two highly recommended books on WordPress. They are highly technical and you require an in-depth knowledge of MySQL, PHP programming, HTML and CSS.
That said, these books really take you “under the hood” as it were to describe the inner workings of WordPress. The provide a lot of example code and you can download the code from the book website.
The books are comprehensive but not easy to read.
This “book” is a bargain. WordPress All-in-One For Dummies by Lisa Sabin-Wilson is literally, as the cover indicates, eight books in one! At almost 800 pages it is not a light tome to carry around.
It covers everything you want to know about WordPress, from basics to advanced topics. This is a useful reference guide to have. And you don’t have to be a programmer.
